Finding a lost dog is stressful, but quick action gets them home fast. Here's what to do.
Stay calm and approach safely
The dog is scared and disoriented. Approach slowly and speak calmly. If they seem friendly, let them sniff your hand before touching them. If they seem aggressive or unwell, keep your distance and call local animal control.
Look for a tag
Check the dog's neck for a collar or tag. Many tags have contact information or a QR code. If you see an NFC tag, tap it with your phone to see the dog's profile and alert the owner instantly with your location.
If there's a traditional tag with a phone number, call immediately and give the owner your location and a description of the dog.
No tag? Try a vet or local posts
Take the dog to a nearby vet to scan for a microchip. Post on local Facebook groups, Nextdoor, or call animal control with a description of the dog, where you found them, and your contact number.
Keep them safe
Bring the dog to a secure location if you can. Offer water. Don't give food yet. If they seem injured, take them to a vet. Stay with the dog until the owner arrives.
Reunite and go
Once the owner arrives, confirm their identity and the dog's description before handing them over. That's it - you've just given someone their dog back.
